Hengām Ensemble

The London-based Hengām Ensemble is passionately dedicated to showcasing Iranian classical music, focusing on instrumental pieces.

Motivated by both social and musical factors, Hengām emerged following the tragic passing of Mahsa Amini in 2022, inspiring a movement among Iranians to reclaim their rights.

Additionally, the group seeks to address the lack of support for the arts in Iran by introducing global audiences to the richness of Iranian dastgāh music. Hengām’s core philosophy combines authenticity and adaptability, emphasizing the importance of preserving historical musical essence while evolving the tradition. As ambassadors of Iranian music, they aim to safeguard these traditions and share them with a wider, non-Iranian audience.

Blend of Jazz & Persian Folk

The Kourosh Kanani Trio is set to perform songs from their highly anticipated new album at The Social venue in London on March 5th. The concert promises to be a unique experience with special guests, including Shohreh Khaatoon, Parham Bahadoran, Ali Nourbakhsh, and Adib Rostami, joining the trio on stage.

Kourosh Kanani’s music is a captivating blend of Jazz and Persian folk and classical music, infused with intricate rhythms inspired by south India, as well as improvisation. This unique combination creates a one-of-a-kind sound that’s both thrilling and progressive, making for an unforgettable evening of music.

Persian Poets’ Tour 2013 in UK

Persian PoetsContemporary Iranian is proud to assist Poetry Translation Centre market their Persian Poets’ Tour 2013 in the UK.

Following the success of our 2012 Persian Poets’ Tour, we’re delighted to announce that three of the poets, Azita Ghahreman(translated by Maura Dooley), Reza Mohammadi (translated by Nick Laird) and Shakila Azizzada (translated by Mimi Khalvati), will be returning for a series of five readings this summer in Manchester, Cardiff, London, Edinburgh and Ledbury. Tickets are already selling fast, so please make sure you reserve your place for these readings.

We’ve published dual-language chapbooks and recorded full-length podcasts featuring each of our three poets which you can access by following these links: Azita Ghahreman, Reza Mohammadi and Shakila Azizzada

Our Persian Poets’ 2012 Tour was an extraordinary success: we had capacity audiences (80 people at The Barber Institute of Fine Arts, Birmingham; 90 people at the Millennium Library Norwich, and a further 80 at Asia House in London) plus a fantastic article by Christina Patterson in The Independent,an insightfulblog post by Gregory Leadbetter on the pleasure of hearing the poems read in their original language and an article by poet Reza Mohammadi, ‘Afghanistan has poetry in its soul’ on The Guardian website.

If you were lucky enough to come along to our 2012 events, we’re sure you’ll be eager to join us again – and if you missed last year’s tour, please do come along this time to experience some remarkable poetry.

Persian Poets’ Tour in UK organised by Poetry Translation Centre

Poetry Translation Centre has organised a Persian Poets’ Tour featuring five acclaimed poets from three countries, all of whom will take part in a series of readings and events across the UK alongside their British poet co-translators.

Persian poetry is rightly famed for the richness of its heritage and many classical Persian poets, such as Rumi and Hafez, are famous across the world. But little is known about how contemporary Persian-language poets have continued to enrich and enliven their tradition, a gap that our forthcoming tour hopes to address.

The Persian language, with local variations, is spoken today in three countries: Afghanistan (Dari), Iran (Farsi) and Tajikistan (Tajik) and our tour will feature poets from each of these countries.

Returning to the UK for the first time since his participation in the PTC’s first World Poets’ Tour in 2005, will be Partaw Naderi (translated by Sarah Maguire) from Afghanistan. He will be joined by Farzaneh Khojandi (translated by Jo Shapcott) from Tajikistan, who took part in our second World Poets’ Tour in 2008. The London-based Afghan poet, Reza Mohammadi (translated by Nick Laird), will also be taking part; as will two poets new to the PTC, Azita Ghahreman (translated by Maura Dooley) from Iran and Shakila Azizzada(translated by Mimi Khalvati) from Afghanistan.
